THE PRINCIPLE OF LOVE & DESIRE: The Shaytan Has No Authority Over the Believers of Allah

The Shaytan Has No Authority Over the Believers

This is the actualization of His saying:

So when you want to recite the Qur'an, seek refuge with Allah from the Shaytan, the outcast (the cursed one). Verily! He has no power over those who believe and put their trust only in their Lord. His power is only over those who obey and follow him (Shaytan), and those who join partners with Him (Allah). [Surah an-Nahl 16:98-100]

So Allah informs us that the Shaytan has no power over those who trust in Allah, and that his power only extends to his allies. Al-mutawalli means "ally" or "friend," and it comes from the word wilayah, which means "alliance." The basis of this word is love and acceptance, and likewise the basis of enmity (the opposite of alliance) is hatred and opposition. The mutawallin are those who love what the Shaytan loves and who accept him, so they are his worshipers, because they obey him and worship him by following his commands, as He, the Most High, said:

Did I not ordain for you, O Children of Adam, that you should not worship the Shaytan? Verily, he is a plain enemy to you, and that you should worship Me. That is a straight path. [Surah Ya-Sin 36:60-61]

The shayațin (devils) may be men or jinn, and people worship them by way of desire and fear. He, the Most High, said:

(Allah) said, "O Iblis (Shaytan)! What prevents you from prostrating yourself to one whom I have created with both My Hands? Are you too proud (to fall prostrate to Adam) or are you one of the high exalted?" (Shaytan) said, "I am better than he-You created me from fire, and You created him from clay." (Allah) said, "Then get out from here, for verily, you are an outcast. Verily! My curse is on you till the Day of Recompense." (Shaytan) said, "My Lord! Give me respite till the day the (dead) are resurrected." (Allah) said, "Verily! You are of those allowed respite till the day of the time appointed." (Shaytan) said, "By Your might, then I will surely mislead them all, except Your chosen slaves among them." (Allah) said, "The truth and (nothing but) the truth I say. I will fill Hell with you (Shaytan) and those of them (mankind) who follow you, together." [Stural Sad 38:75-85]

So the Shaytan swore: "I will surely mislead them all, except Your chosen slaves among them."

Indeed, Allah informed us that the Shaytan has no power over those people. He said in Surah al-Hijr:

(Allah) said, “Then, get out from here, for verily, you are rajim (an outcast or a cursed one), and verily, the curse shall be upon you till the Day of Recompense." [Surah al-Hijr 15:34-35]

(Shaytan) said, "O my Lord! Because you misled me, I shall indeed adorn the path of error for them (mankind) on the earth, and I shall mislead them all, except Your chosen, (guided) slaves among them." [Surah al-Hijr 15:39-401

Allah, the Most High, said:

Certainly, you shall have no authority over My slaves, except those who follow you of the ghawin (mushrikun and those who go astray, criminals, polytheists, and evildoers, etc.). [Surah al-Hijr 15:42]

And His saying "except those who follow you from the ghawin" is an exception that is separate from what it excludes from, since the slaves are those who worship, not those who are worshiped. As He, the Most High, said:

And the slaves of the Most Beneficent (Allah) are those who walk on the earth in humility and sedate- ness, and when the foolish address them (with bad words). they reply back with mild words of gentle-ness. [Surah al-Furqan 25:63]

And He, the Most High, said:

A spring wherefrom the slaves of Allah will drink, causing it to gush forth abundantly. [Surah al-Insan 76:6]

And He, the Most High, said:

Friends on that Day will be foes one to another except al-muttaqin (the pious). (It will be said to the believers:) O My slaves! No fear shall be on you this Day, nor shall you grieve, (you) who believed in Our ayat and were Muslims. [Surah az-Zukhruf 43:67-69]

And He, the Most High, said:

(It has been revealed to me that) when the slave of Allah (Muhammad) stood up invoking (his Lord Allah) in prayer to Him they (the jinn) just made 'round him a dense crowd as if sticking one over the other (in order to listen to the Prophet's recitation). [Surah al-Jinn 72:19]

And He, the Most High, said:

Glorified (and Exalted) be He (Allah) (above all that evil they associate with Him) Who took His slave (Muhammad) for a journey by night from al-Masjid al-Haram (in Makkah) to the farthest mosque (in Jerusalem), the neighborhood whereof We have blessed, so that We might show him (Muhammad ) of Our ayat (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs, etc.). Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer. [Surah al-Isra 17:1]

And He, the Most High, said:

And remember Our slaves Ibrahim, Ishaq, and Ya'qub, (all) owners of strength (in worshiping Us) and (also) of religious understanding. [Surah Şad 38:45]

The Shaytan has no power over the sincere slaves of Allah, and his authority is only over those who take him as an ally and commit shirk, and he swears to tempt them all except the sincere slaves of Allah. Allah informs us that the Shaytan has no authority over Allah's slaves, only those who follow him from the ghawin.

Al-ghayy are the people who follow their desires, and the basis of that is love for other than Allah, like the love for false deities, and that is shirk. Allah, the Most High, said:

His power is only over those who obey and follow him (Shaytan), and those who join partners with Him (Allah). [Surah an-Nahl 16:100]

From this it is clear that someone who has ikhlas (sincerity), for as long as he is truly sincere, is safeguarded from this temptation and shirk, and temptation weakens sincerity and strengthens a person's desires for shirk.
