THE PRINCIPLE OF LOVE & DESIRE: Love for Allah & His Messenger
Love for Allah & His Messenger
Love for Allah and His Messenger is on two levels: obligatory, which is the level of the muqtasidin (those moderate in actions), and supererogatory, which is the level of the sabigin (those foremost in actions).
The first requires that Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) are more beloved to him than anyone or anything else, by not loving anything that He hates, as Allah, the Most High, said:
لَا تَجِدُ قَوۡمًا یُّؤۡمِنُوۡنَ بِاللّٰهِ وَ الۡیَوۡمِ الۡاٰخِرِ یُوَآدُّوۡنَ مَنۡ حَآدَّ اللّٰهَ وَ رَسُوۡلَهٗ وَ لَوۡ کَانُوۡۤا اٰبَآءَهُمۡ اَوۡ اَبۡنَآءَهُمۡ اَوۡ اِخۡوَانَهُمۡ اَوۡ عَشِیۡرَتَهُمۡ ؕ اُولٰٓئِکَ کَتَبَ فِیۡ قُلُوۡبِهِمُ الۡاِیۡمَانَ وَ اَیَّدَهُمۡ بِرُوۡحٍ مِّنۡهُ ؕ وَ یُدۡخِلُهُمۡ جَنّٰتٍ تَجۡرِیۡ مِنۡ تَحۡتِهَا الۡاَنۡهٰرُ خٰلِدِیۡنَ فِیۡهَا ؕ رَضِیَ اللّٰهُ عَنۡهُمۡ وَ رَضُوۡا عَنۡهُ ؕ اُولٰٓئِکَ حِزۡبُ اللّٰهِ ؕ اَلَاۤ اِنَّ حِزۡبَ اللّٰهِ هُمُ الۡمُفۡلِحُوۡنَ ﴿۲۲
You (O Muhammad (ﷺ)) will not find any people who believe in Allah and the Last Day, making friendship with those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even though they were their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their kindred (people). For such, He has written faith in their hearts, and strengthened them with rah (proofs, light, and true guidance) from Himself. And We will admit them to Gardens (Paradise) under which rivers flow, to dwell therein (forever). Allah is pleased with them, and they with Him. They are the party of Allah. Verily, it is the party of Allah that will be the successful. [Surah al-Mujadilah 58:22]
And that requires one to love all that Allah has made obligatory, and hate everything He has forbidden, and that is obligatory. Every believer must love what Allah loves and hate what Allah hates. Allah, the Most High, said:
ذٰلِکَ بِاَنَّهُمُ اتَّبَعُوۡا مَاۤ اَسۡخَطَ اللّٰهَ وَ کَرِهُوۡا رِضۡوَانَهٗ فَاَحۡبَطَ اَعۡمَالَهُمۡ ﴿۲۸
That is because they followed that which angered Allah, and hated that which pleased Him. So He made their deeds fruitless. [Surah Muhammad 47:28]
And He, the Most High, said:
وَإِذَا مَا أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ فَمِنْهُم مَّن يَقُولُ أَيُّكُمْ زَادَتْهُ هَذِهِ إِيمَانًا فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا فَرَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَانًا وَهُمْ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ وَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَتْهُمْ رِجْسًا إِلَى رِجْسِهِمْ وَمَاتُوا وَهُمْ كَافِرُونَ )
And whenever there comes down a surah (chapter from the Qur'an), some of them (hypocrites) say, "Which of you has had his faith increased by it?" As for those who believe, it has increased their faith, and they rejoice. But as for those in whose hearts is a disease (of doubt, disbelief, and hypocrisy), it will add suspicion and doubt to their suspicion, disbelief, and doubt, and they die while they are disbelievers. [Surah at-Tawbah 9:124-125]
And He, the Most High, said:
وَالَّذِي وَ الَّذِیۡنَ اٰتَیۡنٰهُمُ الۡکِتٰبَ یَفۡرَحُوۡنَ بِمَاۤ اُنۡزِلَ اِلَیۡکَ وَ مِنَ الۡاَحۡزَابِ مَنۡ یُّنۡکِرُ بَعۡضَهٗ ؕ قُلۡ اِنَّمَاۤ اُمِرۡتُ اَنۡ اَعۡبُدَ اللّٰهَ وَ لَاۤ اُشۡرِکَ بِهٖ ؕ اِلَیۡهِ اَدۡعُوۡا وَ اِلَیۡهِ مَاٰبِ ﴿۳۶
Those to whom We have given the Book (such as 'Abdullah bin Salam and other Jews who embraced Islam) rejoice at what has been revealed unto you (i.e., the Qur'an), but there are among the confed- erates (from the Jews and pagans) those who reject a part thereof. Say (O Muhammad): "I am commanded only to worship Allah (alone) and to not join partners with Him. To Him (alone) I call and to Him is my return." [Surah ar-Ra'd 13:36]
As for the love of the sabiqin, then it is to completely love that which Allah loves of the nawafil (voluntary acts of worship) and excellent virtues. This is the way those who are close to Allah draw close to Him.
